Why Canada Is Losing Entrepreneurs to the US (2026)
The US is using tariffs to trap companies inside America. Canada? It’s gift-wrapping its own founders and handing them right back. π
Look at the timing. Canada is the only G7 country in recession. Business investment has dropped five quarters in a row. There’s a once-in-a-decade chance to poach the entrepreneurs Trump’s trade war is scaring off β no tariffs required, just an open door.
Instead:
β Build a company, hire people, pay taxes β you get a temporary permit.
β There’s no route where business success = permanent residence. The Start-Up Visa is closed; founders get funneled into a points system designed for fresh grads, not job creators.
β And the best tax breaks (a 9% rate, a 35% refundable R&D credit) are reserved for Canadian-controlled companies β so a foreign founder is treated as second-class before residency even enters the picture.
Model it on a small 3-person startup and the gap between what Canada does and what it could do is ~CA$200K+ over six years. Per founder. So the founder does the math⦠and leaves.
Canada doesn’t need a trade war to win this. It needs one rule: build a business + create jobs = a place to stay. Reward results, not paperwork.
Own goal of the decade. π₯
Agree, or am I missing something? π

Before anyone comments “we don’t want rich people buying passports” β read again. Canada isn’t a tax haven. These founders would pay full Canadian tax and create jobs. You’re not turning away money launderers, you’re turning away taxpayers. That’s what makes it insane.
So genuinely: name me one other G7 country asleep enough to do this. π
