Alberta just approved a $13 billion data centre. That’s not even the headline.
The real number is 19.5 gigawatts.
Last week Meta confirmed its first Canadian data centre in Sturgeon County, north of Edmonton. $13B+. Over 3,000 workers at peak construction.
Big project. But one project.
Here’s the part most people missed:
Alberta’s grid operator now has 41 data centre projects in its connection queue — 19.5 GW of potential load.
In early 2024, that number was 5 GW.
A 4x jump in 18 months.
The province has set a target of $100 billion in data centre investment by 2030.
Meta alone covers $13B of it.
What this signals for anyone in construction and development:
This isn’t a single win. It’s a multi-year pipeline forming — civil, power, cooling, industrial fit-out.
The firms positioning on that supply chain now are the ones who’ll be busy in 2028.
One caveat worth stating: 19.5 GW is queue, not confirmed capacity. Not every project gets built. But even a fraction of it reshapes Alberta’s construction demand for a decade.
The capital is choosing Alberta. The question is who’s ready to build it.
